hanoi sleeper

this is our the car in the train we took from Hanoi to Sapa, the northern part of north Vietnam where they grow millions of acres of rice on stepped paddies. 6 beds to a car, there wasn't even enough room to sit up far enough to drink water!! The four of us were fortunate to be paired with a lovely Iranian couple, who'd gone through hell to get visas.

Jenny and I didn't spend much time in the car, and instead used a pocket knife to unlock the windows in the corridor and hung our heads out the whole time, listening to music in the night.
our last hours in Hanoi were cathartic: we found an awesome restaurant down an incredibly narrow alleyway, the floors arranged in maze-like fashion with probably 5 different levels connected by tiny ladders/staircases! over five hours or so the four of us finished off a bottle and a half of vodka here and made a few friends among the waiters. our hostel manager basically dragged us, laughing, onto the 11 oclock train.
