from Thaton (tiny town on the Burmese border) we hired a bamboo raft for a leisurely three-day trip down the Mae Kok river to Chiang Rai, captained by two Thai men who knew no English whatsoever. these guys assembled the whole boat the night before we left, and cooked us amazing food roasted on bamboo skewers over a homemade, riverside firepit.
this is jenny jacobi, doing what we did for the larger part of those three days. behind her is the 'bathroom', an enclosure open top and bottom to the elements, with two bamboo beams to stand on.
woke at 6am, stayed on the river about 10 hours, stopping to swim and eat... ah the life.
